BIGOT ALERT: James K. Walker, leader of the Watchman Fellowship

James K. Walker is a proud ex-Mormon who converted to fundamental Christianity. He considers himself an expert in the field of Christian counter-cult evangelism, apologetics, and discernment. He is president of the Watchman Fellowship, an organization that develops books, videos, and materials to "expose" cultists and other religions that Walker disagrees with. The website features material to help fundamental Christians convert those they believe belong to cults. This includes material focused on slandering the many religious groups, particularly Jehovah's Witnesses, Latter-day Saints, New Age, Occult, Scientology, and the Unification Church.

It also targets celebrities as Tom Cruise, Madonna, Dan Brown and Oprah Winfrey. The owner of the site uses his bigotry as a platform to pander for money and donations by selling books, pamphlets, and videos.

The article Chicken Soup for the Soul Reviewed is a great example of the kind of exposing that the organization does.

In A 2nd Helping of Chicken Soup for the Soul can be found at least 38 New Age or Mormon contributors or attributions, including M. Scott Peck, Steve Andreas, Sai Baba, Martin Buber, Gandhi, William James, Joseph Campbell, Leo Buscaglia, Napoleon Hill, Norman Vincent Peale, Benjamin Hoff, Ken Blanchard (Please See Update), Canfield, Hansen, and T.M. promoter Harold Bloomfield.

In A 3rd Helping of Chicken Soup for the Soul are at least 23 New Age or Mormon contributors or attributions. And in Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul, there are at least 20 New Age contributors, with several of them having multiple stories (as in all the books in the series).

Some of the authors or references in these last two volumes are Dr. Bernie Siegel (six times), Peter McWilliams, Norman Cousins, Jonas Salk, Joan Borysenko, Marianne Williamson, Fr. John Groff, Alan Cohen, Les Brown, and two Mormon contributors - Art Berg and Hal Manwaring.

And finally (for now), in Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul, at least 27 New Age and Mormon authors or attributions are found, including a "psychic", two Transcendental Meditation trainers, a Unity minister, and a shaman.

Chicken Soup for the Working Soul has at least 42 New Age and Mormon contributors and attributions, including Joseph Campbell, Jean Houston, Pierre Telhard de Chardin, Gerald Janpolski, Meister Eckhart, Buddha, and Ernest Holmes.

RADICAL BIGOT ALERT: Paul Addis, San Francisco Church Bomber

Why is bigotry so dangerous? Bigotry doesn't always stop with words. Sometimes, it leads to violence. Paul Addis is a great example of bigotry gone awry.

This is what the Associated Press reported on this event:

A San Francisco performance artist charged with prematurely torching the Burning Man festival's namesake effigy has now been arrested on suspicion of trying to set fire to the historic Grace Cathedral.

San Francisco police say they caught Paul Addis Sunday night on the top steps of the cathedral with an ammunition belt of small explosives strapped around his waist.

It seems that this isn't the first time that Mr. Addis has used fire to try and make a point. He was also accused of prematurely torching the Burning Man festival's namesake effigy.

Anyone who doesn't understand the significance of burning down a church, is a bigot. Welcome to the club Paul.

BIGOT ALERT: Jennifer, a Christian Brody File Reader

The definition we use for defining a bigot - "a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own." Based on this statement from the Brody File, Jennifer, a reader from the Brody file, fits into this category.

These are her comments in an article about Romney giving a speech on Mormonism.

I have done a fair amount of research on the Mormon religion and I am in shock with some Christian leaders coming out and endorsing Romney. Is control of power more important than principle? …How come Christians are willing to vote or get behind a Mormon that could be running our country? (Don't tell me he is pro-life and against gay marriage… We know he has flipped flopped on these issues) I will not vote for Romney if he gets the nomination. I will vote for principle and vote third party for the first time. If Christians decide in large numbers to vote for a Mormon, what message do we send out to non-believers??? Will they think, because he and the Mormon religion sell it that way, that he and the Mormon religion are a Christian faith of the Bible?

You can read other comments here: The Brody File

Jennifer, your comments are bigoted and you have bigotry towards Mormonism. Unfortunately, I think this is something that I've been seeing way too much on the Internet lately. You, like the bigoted Dr. Robert Jefress, need to learn that the U.S. Presidency is NOT an elected missionary position for your church.

BIGOT ALERT: Paul Derengowski, founder of ApologeticsOnline.net

As always, let me state the definition I use for a bigot - "A prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own." Paul Derengowski fits this definition perfectly and uses the internet to spread his hate for religions other than his own.

Paul posts as "Deren" over at Christian Forums, an online Christian community. He also writes for Apologetics Online, a website that puts Science in the category of "Non-Christian."

Paul Derengowski is particularly bigoted when it comes to Atheism and Jehovah Witnesses. For example, in a review of Richard Dawkin's book "The God Delusion," Paul attacks Atheists by elevating "believers" to a higher status than Atheists and states that Atheists have no meaning to life:

...the believer has a genuine grasp on life and death by accepting the reality of both as a rationally, whole person. The atheist cannot say the same thing because there is no ultimate meaning to either life or death, which is both irrational and unwholesome, if not simply pathological.

Sorry Paul, but attacking a bigot with bigotry isn't how it goes.

An example of his bigoted writing can also be found in the article Helpful Comebacks or Misleading Pretenses which Paul wrote about the Watchtower Society and said that "they are vacuous in the sense that one must contrive or manipulate people into doing something for all the wrong reasons, which is either misguided guilt or unnecessary fear. They are disingenuous because it makes liars and deceivers out of the Witnesses."

While looking around on Christian Forums, I found an extremely bigoted comment that Paul made about Mormons, so it looks like he also has some bigotry towards this religion. When a Mormon forum poster made this statement in a thread:

Unfortunately, the history of the human race shows that many, many humans are FAR from reasonable. What happens when, one day, a Hitler rules the world?

Paul retorted with
Or worse yet, a Mormon!

So, this guy thinks that a Mormon ruling the world would be worse than Hitler, a man who killed millions and wrecked havoc in Europe. If you want to read more of Paul's bigoted nonsense, you can check out his his blog.

Paul, your ministry isn't one of love. It is a ministry of bigotry, misinformation, lies, and hate. If there is a Christ, I'm certain that he's ashamed of you.

BIGOT ALERT: Kathy Griffin - Comedian & Actor

Kathy Griffin recently made these comments recently while accepting an Emmy.

Are these comments bigoted or not? I'm inclined to believe that anyone who goes on a stage and says that the diety of any religion can "suck it" is a bigot.

BIGOT ALERT: Dr. Robert Jeffress - Pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas

The definition we use for defining a bigot - "a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own." Dr. Robert Jeffress fits into the category of a bigot. Here's a quote from the news story by Grommer Jeffers Jr. in the Dallas Morning News:

"Mitt Romney is a Mormon, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise," Dr. Jeffress said in a sermon on Sept. 30. "Even though he talks about Jesus as his Lord and savior, he is not a Christian. Mormonism is not Christianity. Mormonism is a cult."

Saying that Mormonism isn't Christian is one thing. It's another to go ahead and say that someone is not Christian simply because they are Mormon.

"I have conservative friends who are saying, well, he believes in Jesus, we believe in Jesus, let's just hold hands and sing kumbaya," he said. "It doesn't work that way. If a person is supporting Romney, that's fine. But don't confuse him with being a Christian."

Shame on your Dr. Jeffers for spreading hate and intolerance in our country. As a minister, your followers should expect more from you. Anyone who would flat out eliminate a candidate based on his religious beliefs is a bigot.

Why Blog About Bigotry?

The internet offers the world many wonderful things - the best of which is the ability to freely express oneself. Unfortunately, with this wonderful freedom comes a nasty dark side and that is what this blog will expose.

Bigotry can mean different things to different people. The definition for bigotry that we'll use on this site is "a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own." Bigotry can come in the form of racism, religious intolerance, sexual orientation intolerance, or even political intolerance. It is way too prevelant in our society today, and I hope that this blog will start a discussion on the topic and raise the level of discourse on the web.
